ZAMBEZI NATIONAL PARK
Mighty Zambezi
Zambezi National Park is conjoined with Victoria Falls National Park and both parks cover an area of 56 000 hectares. This park consists of 40 kilometers of the Zambezi River frontage and boasts four of the big five: elephant, lion, buffalo and leopard.
The Park is rich with herds of sable, kudu, impala, zebra, giraffe and other species of smaller wildlife, and over 400 species of birds have been recorded including the lanner falcon, goliath heron and the African skimmer among others.
The Zambezi river is also renowned for its prolific fishing experience with bream and tenacious tiger fish which make up part of over 75 fish species that may be found in the water.
Most of the park consists of Zambezian and Mopane savanna woodlands.
How to get there
Access by road
From Bulawayo, take the A8 and drive 437km to Victoria Falls, then turn into Park Way Drive in the middle of town. This road will take you through the centre of town and then out all the way to the Zambezi National Park entrance gate.
Land at Victoria Falls International Airport and travel via road to Zambezi National Park.
What to bring
- Binoculars, cameras, hiking/ walking shoes and wildlife reference books or smartphone applications.
- Food supplies enough for the stay.
- First Aid Kit (With antihistamines, plasters, arnica oil for sprains and an antiseptic for stings and cuts)
- Camping tents.
- Sleeping bag
- Torch
What to wear
- For summer (September – March), cool comfortable clothing is recommended along with sunhats and sunscreen.
- For winter and autumn (April – August), warm clothing is recommended, especially for the night times.
- Wear earthy colours and avoid bright-coloured clothing like red, yellow, bright green.
