Chizarira National Park

“Home of the Hidden Gorges”

This park is situated on top of the great Zambezi escarpment in the north western part of Zimbabwe, overlooking the mighty Zambezi Valley and upper waters of Lake Kariba. Chizarira National Park is the fourth-largest national park in Zimbabwe after the iconic Hwange, Gonarezhou and Mana Pools National Parks.

The name of the park comes from the Batonga word chijalila, which translates into English as “great barrier”, referring to the Zambezi Escarpment, of which Chizarira’s rough terrain forms a part. Chizarira was declared as a non-hunting reserve in 1938 and as a game reserve in 1963. This large remote area of 2,000 square kilometres of wild, untouched flora and fauna is endowed with magnificent gorges, plateaus and flood plains which make this pristine park a spectacular destination for any visitor.
