Overview
Chizarira National Park is situated on top of the great Zambezi escarpment in the north western part of Zimbabwe overlooking the mighty Zambezi Valley and upper waters of Lake Kariba.
The park is well known for magnificent gorges, numerous natural springs and extended scenic landscape.
As the 4th largest national park of Zimbabwe, it covers 1910 square kilometers and is home to several species including lion, leopard, buffalo and elephant; and a good mix of other animals such as the rare roan antelope, sable and klipspringer among others.
Chizarira is also a bird watcher’s paradise and has over 360 species on its checklist. The rare Taita falcon and Angolan Pitta is often spotted roosting on the cliffs. Wild natural area with rocky landscapes.
The Park is dominated by Miombo woodland whilst lower lying areas are covered with Mopane scrubland and Baobab.
How to get there
Access by road
From Harare on the A5 turnoff toward Gokwe at Kwekwe.
At Gokwe take the Binga tarred road via Chitekete for 120 kilometers until you reach a T-junction with a sign post indicating Binga to the left.
Take this dirt road towards Binga via Siabuwa Business Centre until you see a sign indicating Chizarira National Park at the 47 kilometers peg.
Turn left and proceed for 20 kilometers to the Park headquarters.
From Bulawayo on the A8 for Chizarira National Park turnoff east at Cross Roads 50 kilometers south of Hwange town, then travel 28 kilometers to Kamativi on good gravel road, then 50 kilometers to the Mlibizi turnoff.
Continue east 54 kilometers to the Binga turnoff.
Continue east toward Siabuwa, but turn right after 47 kilometers soon after crossing the Mucheni River where a sign indicates Chizarira National Park.
A further 20 kilometers of dirt road up and over the escarpment gets the visitor to Park headquarters at Manzituba.
Access by air
Airstrip exists at Chizarira National Park Camp for private/charter aircraft. Prior permission to land must be
obtained from Chizarira National Park Office.
Fly into Binga Airstrip and then travel 95kilometers by road to Chizarira National Park along Siabuwa road.
What to bring
- Binoculars, cameras, hiking/ walking shoes and wildlife reference books or smartphone applications.
- Food supplies enough for the stay.
- First Aid Kit (With antihistamines, plasters, arnica oil for sprains and an antiseptic for stings and cuts)
- Camping tents.
- Sleeping bag
- Torch
What to wear
- For summer (September – March), cool comfortable clothing is recommended along with sunhats and sunscreen.
- For winter and autumn (April – August), warm clothing is recommended, especially for the night times.
- Wear earthy colours and avoid bright-coloured clothing like red, yellow, bright green.
Caution
- Elephants with calves
- Avoid going beyond the fence on the gorges
- Lions with cubs
